Hydrography and circulation of the Bay of Bengal during withdrawal phase of the southwest monsoon ArchiMer

Hydrographic data were collected from 3 to 10 September 1996 along two transects; one at 18 degrees N and the other at 90 degrees E. The data were used to examine the thermohaline, circulation and chemical properties of the Bay of Bengal during the withdrawal phase of the southwest monsoon. The surface salinity exhibited wide spatial variability with values as low as 25.78 at 18 degrees N / 87 degrees E and as high as 34.79 at 8 degrees N / 90 degrees E. Two high salinity cells (S > 35.2) were noticed around 100 m depth along the 90 degrees E transect. The wide scatter in T-S values between 100 and 200 m depth was attributed to the presence of the Arabian Sea High Salinity (ASHS) water mass. Lenses of extremely cold water in the central Ionian Sea ArchiMer

Two lenses of cold water with core temperature 12.5 degrees C were observed in the central Ionian Sea between the thermocline and the salinity maximum due to Levantine Intermediate Water. The estimated salinity in the lenses is 37.8. The relevance of the observation is assured by the high number of expendable probes deployed. The lens diameters are estimated at 30 km. Analogy with a less spectacular feature contained in oceanographic measurements in the following year implies that the lenses rotate clockwise. The cold water lenses originate from the Adriatic Sea with a generation mechanism equivalent to meddy formation at the Iberian peninsula (eddy of Mediterranean water in the Atlantic Ocean). Méthodologie d'étude la masse d''eau : aspects théorique et pratique ArchiMer

Le problème de l'échantillonnage des masses d'eau suppose, au préalable, la définition d'un état de référence, de la notion de variation saisonnière et locale. Ces dernières sont principalement liées aux conditions hydrodynamiques (courants de marée) et aux influences téluriques (apports fluviaux). Il sera mentionné, dans une première partie, les cas d'une mer sans marée (Port-La-Nouvelle), d'une mer à marée (sites de la Manche) et d'un estuaire (Le Blayais). Les différentes stratégies d'échantillonnage seront exposées. Une mention particulière sera fiate à propos des mers à marée : historiquement des méthodologies utilisées, point de vue Lagrangien et Eulerien, applications pratiques. During the SEFOS 95 cruise (25 March to 15 April 1995) (figure I) a number of CTD casts were made in order to study the intermediate Mediterranean water (IMW) off the west and north coasts of the Iberian Peninsula. One long-term mooring, for current measurement at four levels, was deployed at 43 degrees 57' N - 5 degrees 51' Vii from February to May. Devant le problème du réchauffement planétaire, il est indispensable d'approfondir notre compréhension des mécanismes et des rétroactions qui régulent le climat pour pouvoir prédire les conséquences de tels changements. L'étude des climats passés permet de mettre en évidence la façon dont les événements climatiques s'encharnent. En particulier, étudier des périodes plus chaudes que l'actuelle permet de mieux comprendre ce vers quoi nous semblons nous diriger.
